There are certain income limits and rules related to home occupancy but - in a nutshell - a qualified buyer could get a 10% tax refund on the purchase of a primary residence - not to exceed $8,000 maximum.
To illustrate: Purchase a $50,000 home and get $5,000 back. Purchase an $80,000 home and get the maximum of $8,000 back. Purchase a $125,000 home and receive the maximum - $8,000.

A Minnesota Evening
I always enjoy visiting with folks from around the country regarding my living in Minnesota. People usually ask, 'How can you stand the winters?' It is true; winters can be a little tough sometimes. After nearly 50 years I still haven't gotten quite used to the -100 degree wind chills . . .
But seriously, one Minnesota, moon-lit evening whilst drawing warmth from a lake-side camp fire - loon-song drifting through the stillness . . . Trust me, enduring a little winter chill is WELL worth the exchange.
Minnesota summers are like nothing else - they explode on the senses. You can feel them, you can see them, you can hear them, you can taste them, and you can smell them.
Breathe deep the sweet, fragrant bouquet of fresh-cut hay whisping through a June evening. Witness the healing glow of a lake-view sunset. Nibble some fresh-picked strawberries, feel the sugar sand between your toes, and hear your own restful sigh as you discover this place - YOUR place - in the land of 10,000 lakes.

The 'REAL' in REAL ESTATE
I have lost track of the times a friend has shared with me, 'Buying this property was the smartest thing I ever did!' I believe my father-in-law says it best when he observes, 'Buying land is smart because they are not making anymore.' For whatever reason I can relate to that.
Indeed, there is nothing more 'REAL' than real estate. Our homes - they are where we live and where we gather and share with family and friends. Lake homes and vacation homes represent escapes from our fast-paced lives. Hunting woods! Ah, for the memories and friendships. And what about the 'family farm'? I am from a farming background. I can understand the bond that develops between individuals and families and generations . . . and land.

Memorial Day 2009
THIS IS IT!! Memorial Day Weekend 2009! This weekend is typically hailed as the start of summer. Graduations, sunshine, fishing, golfing, boating - and a host of fabulous outdoor activities. Otter Tail County explodes with life - typically on this weekend. There is probably no finer place to be than in Minnesota on Memorial Day Weekend.
But as we are roaring into high gear for a summer of endless adventure let's also pause to reflect on the true heart and soul of Memorial Day. My hope is for each of us to pay tribute to our nation's freedom and resolve by remembering those who have died in service to our great country.

Cabin Fever?

The time is now
Things are looking up!
Greetings! Do you know what my first piece of advice is for folks interested in buying or selling real estate in Otter Tail County? Just this: Turn off the TV, stop reading the newspaper.
Thankfully, our local economy is doing much, much better than what we see nationally. Yes, we have some challenges. Yes, a person needs to be careful with spending.
However, the purchase of a new home – with energy-efficient features – or a downsizing from a current home might be exactly what is needed to bring about greater financial security in your own situation.
The REAL PLUS is interest rates are ridiculously low. Combined with the fantastic selection of properties currently available I can only ask: What are you waiting for!?!
The opportunities available in the current real estate market are not going to last. If ever there was a time to make a wise real estate move, the time is NOW!
